The Blackburn Diocese Annual report and statement of financial activities for the year ended December 31st 2004 was approved by the Trustee Body and presented to Diocesan Council on 1st October. Each Branch and Deanery should now have a copy of this document, which provides a financial summary of the work of the Mothers' Union in the Diocese and includes units, deaneries and branches.

During 2004 giving to all areas of the Mothers' union work increased, both within the Diocese and Worldwide. The diocesan subscription was collected from 5696 members and amounted to £15,949 and income from the sales of literature, gifts and ties remained steady at £24,663. Fundraising costs across the branches amounted to £8,816 which was about 3.8% of the total income excluding investment income. Management and administrative costs of £13,638 represented about 5.7% of the total income, which was very reasonable bearing in mind that there are 191 branches, deaneries and units.

Total direct charitable expenditure amounted to £193,758 and is the main expenditure of the work of the MU in the Diocese and included:

£     5,900  Delegated to the units for their work

£     2,000  Royal Lancashire Show

£  180,426  Spent by the Diocese, deaneries, deanery literature, units and branches

£     5,432  Kato & Camelot (offset by ticket income of £5,700)

Whilst the overall position at the end of 2004 was good and giving was excellent, the main concern is falling membership, which can result in loss of income.

Donations to date in 2005 for the work/projects in the Diocese are down 3.7% on the comparable period for 2004. This is possibly countered by the excellent response to the Tsunami Appeal; however the work of the Diocese is ongoing year on year and continues to need funding. Please remember the work of the Mothers' Union in the Diocese when considering your donations.

Subscriptions 2006

The Trustees have agreed an annual subscription of £9.50 for 2006, any branch or Deanery subscription should be added to this. Incorporated membership remains at £10.00. Home & Family subscription will be £6.00 pa.

2006 2005
Mary Sumner House £6.35 £6.10
Diocese £3.15 £3.00
Total £9.50 £9.10

Thank you very much to all our Treasurers for their continuing hard work, it is important and very much appreciated.

Marion Barlow, Diocesan Treasurer.
