Leyland Deanery

Making tiny baby clothes for the Premature Baby Unit is just one of the ongoing Branch projects in Leyland Deanery.

In Leyland Deanery we have 15 Branches with 509 members and 10 Deanery members.

On Mothering Sunday 2008 a record 10 new members were enrolled into St Andrew, Longton Mothers' union.

The majority of the new members came from the EMU (evening Mothers' Union) which was set up in Autumn 2007.

The photograph (left) shows the new members together with the vicar Rev Andrew Parkinson, Enrolling Member Mrs Margaret Thompson and Leyland Presiding Member Mrs Jenny Towers (also a member of the branch) who carried the banner at the Mothering Sunday service.

Other projects include making and supplying emergency toilet bags for use in the  A & E department at Royal Preston Hospital.

Members also volunteer at the local hospice, undertake hospital visiting and help at the Child Contact Centre in Preston.

Mothers’ Union Members from Leyland Deanery met together on a beautiful sunny evening, to celebrate the annual Deanery Festival, at Holy Trinity Church Hoghton on Wednesday 7th May.

The guests included Mrs Marian Whitehead, Diocesan President, Mrs Vivienne Goddard, Honorary Vice- President, Mrs Parnal Rothwell, Diocesan Secretary, and Mrs Marjorie Holt the Presiding Member of Chorley Deanery.

During the service, which included hymns and readings, The Right Rev Geoff Pearson Bishop of Lancaster commissioned Father Nicholas Davis as Leyland Deanery Chaplain. The Bishop also gave the address.

The Vicar of Holy Trinity, Rev David Dickinson conducted the service of Evensong; and the new Deanery Chaplain led the prayers.

The Branch Banners were processed at the beginning of the service and afterwards they formed a guard of honour along the pathway to the Church Hall where the members of Hoghton Mothers’ Union served refreshments.

The collection from the service is to be donated to the Overseas fund.

Our thanks go to Enrolling Member Veronica Roper and her Branch for a successful and truly memorable evening.

Jenny Towers
